A Servant's Heart

I know I've been away from here for a few days and I was feeling somewhat guilty. Then God laid on my heart why - I needed the right words to say. Today's blog is not based on a specific verse but on what God wants me to say.

When you got up this morning to get ready for work - whatever that work may be - how did you think about it? Did you only think of what you can get out of it? If you work because you need to earn a salary to live, is that your only motivation? If you are working in a job you dislike, what is your attitude towards your employer? I get that there are many variables that will go into the answer you might give for these questions, but let's explore a servant's heart.

When you go to that job that God has provided you with so you can take care of your family, I bet that you would be eager to go to work everyday if you were working directly FOR God, with Jesus as your supervisor. I know I would! To get to see Him everyday and talk to Him and get direction from Him - wow! Now that's a cool job! But guess what, you already are working directly for God. As a Christian, everything you do reflects God's grace and faith at work in your life. I'm not saying every day will be sunny and roses and ponies - some days will be a struggle. But every day you get to work is a day you have the opportunity to shine and show others the grace and love of Christ through your attitude and your work product. Ephesians 6:7 (ESV) says, "Rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man."  Jesus himself modeled the example he wanted us to use. In John 13, Jesus washed his apostles' feet. He tells them he's given them an example he wanted them to follow. If he, as teacher and Lord, washed their feet, so too can they wash others', for no one is above another. We are all human.

We work for people and we work for a paycheck, but that is not our life's work. Our life's work is to show God's love and humility right where we are, everyday. Do you go above and beyond when asked, or do you grumble about it not being your job? Do you embrace change or do you bristle because 'that's the way we've always done it'? I can't say that I've never harbored these thoughts. Spiritual growth though comes when I acknowledge the wrong and make it right.

Successful businesses and enterprises are built on change. They're built on new ideas and trying and failing at doing things differently. The key behind all that? The attitude of those doing the work. Having a servant's heart means doing your work as if God is going to complete your performance evaluation. He knows when we are making excuses. He knows the status of our hearts. Make yours a servant's heart today and reap the rewards to come.
