The Avengers

114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Psalm 119:114 NIV

I'm copied up in my newly appointed (almost finished) Star Wars room. It's really just our extra bedroom that we remade into a Star Wars themed room for watching movies and housing guests. Right now The Avengers is on tv. I think I'd feel pretty safe if I was protected by them, especially Hulk or Captain America. If they were real I'd like to think that the world would be a bit safer than it is now. But they're not real. It's only Hollywood magic for cosmic book heroes.

But God is real. His sword and shield are real. To be surrounded by him is to be completely protected. There's no need for heroes. He's got no use for a magic hammer or power suit. He's the almighty. He is enough.

Let God be your strength and shield. And let Hollywood have it's heroes.

The Macarena

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 NIV

Our after-Christmas purchase was an Echo. Yes, we've become Alexa users, connected to the web 24/7. I'm sure as time goes on we will transform into a smart house, but for now, Alexa is good at playing music which is very good for impromptu dance parties. I have passed on my love of music and dance to my youngest, and of course we love all the fun party dances. I've taught her the Macarena, the electric slide and the cotton eye joe (which I learned from my oldest at her wedding). And we can't forget the Thriller. What would party dances be without it?

What can all this have to do with today's verse? I've made a disciple out of my youngest. She listens and learns from me when it comes to music. She also teaches me about more modern tunes and I then enjoy giving her history lessons of how that music started or where they got the inspiration.

It's so easy to pass on the things we love. So why not pass on our love for Jesus? Make disciples out of those you know. Get them to be eager to learn and then let them give their insight as well. Each person has their own unique way of telling the gospel. They pass it on and those people pass it on and soon the love of God is known everywhere.

Make disciples of all. The world needs to know of God's love.

Praying in the Spirit

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 NIV

Sometimes our hearts can't say anything. Sometimes God's words are perfect and need no introduction, no explanation. Sometimes our hearts pray in sounds and words that we don't understand because the Spirit is interceeding on our behalf. This is the fulfillment of the promise in this verse. When we can't, God can. And sometimes it's when we are so weak that we can't even pray.

Let the Spirit pray for you as he renews you in body and soul.

Christmas Rush is Over, and I'm Tired

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 NIV

It's been a busy few days for us. It's probably been a busy few days for you too. You may even have to return to your job this week as I do, or you may not have gotten a break at all. There are many people who work to keep our communities running even on holidays. We are truly blessed in that we believe everyone should be able to be home with their families on the holidays, especially Christmas.

As I said, it's been busy. It's a busy time of year. We are tired, worn down, exhausted. From the preparation to the visiting to the parties to the volunteering and shopping, we are bone tired. But somehow, somewhere from within, we summon everything we have to pull through. And we do it beautifully and to some, effortlessly.

We may be so dismayed or worn down from sin and strife that we have no idea how we are going to get through. How is that bill going to get paid? How are we going to put food on the table? How am I going to get well? And yet somehow we pull through. That's God. And when people are amazed at how easy we make it look, that's just God showing off. His power is sufficient. He will not let you fall. He will be there to help you pull through.

Christmas Light Show

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace good will to men.” Luke 2:13‭-‬14 NIV

Today is Christmas Eve. It's a time for spending with family and friends, a time for reflection, a time to enjoy the peace that naturally comes with the season. We use this time to celebrate the birth of Christ. We put up lights and decorations to commemorate the holiday.

We toured lights tonight in our town. We even saw a few that came with music. Those are the best. So can you imagine that night when a host of angels joined  in singing and worshipping the arrival of the savior? I think that would have been the ultimate light show. Nothing could ever top that, don't you think?

So as you go about your festivities, put on some music and imagine what that heavenly choir sounded like.

One day we'll know. Merry Christmas!

Aimless Words

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9 NIV

Words are plentiful and it doesn't cost much to say them. In fact, a lot of people throw words around like they are millionaires passing out money. They are careless with their words. And words can hurt if passed along needlessly. But in the end it's only words.

We can say we love God all day long. But unless we put some ooomph behind those words, they are meaningless. Faith without works is dead. Words without action are wasted air.

God didn't just tell us he loved us. He showed us with his actions. He didn't leave us waiting for anything. He followed through on his promise. Praise God he did!

How will you demonstrate God's love?

What's in a Name

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 NIV

A name game was going around Facebook today. In fact, there were several names games floating around. This time of year social media users like to circulate the games that give you a funny name based on your initials or birth month. I think for one I was Happy Gigglesworth or some such thing. Another game is to state your first name that is the same as a famous person then say you're not that person, such as I'm Brad, but not Pitt. Also on the news today the most unusual baby names and the most popular baby names for 2017.

What's in a name? It can be a baby's first identity. A woman changes her last name (or not) when she marries, or uses a combination of names. I'm named after my mother's best friend and my middle name is a family tradition. I use my maiden name on my Facebook account so people I knew in my childhood recognize which person I am. There's a lot in a name.

You can imagine the care that God took when he decided on Jesus' name. It had to be carefully chosen because of who he would be...our savior. Our redeemer. The Prince of peace. Jehovah.

So what's in a name. Salvation. Eternity. All in the name of Jesus, the baby born in a manger.

Go Tell it on the Mountain

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. Romans 1:16 NIV

We got our Christmas cards today and I sat down to "mail a few." I honestly didn't think I'd have that many to share. Turns out I used all but one. The cards turned out so well that I wanted to share them all.

When my daughter got engaged, I was so excited it paralyzed me to have to wait to share the good news.

When my older daughter was pregnant, I practically burst until I could tell everybody.

Good news is news we want to share. We feel we have to share or else we'll just fall apart. We don't want to hold it in. We're not ashamed of what people will think. We just want to tell everyone.

So why should we feel ashamed about the good news of Christ? It's great news! It's life changing and uplifting. Don't keep it to yourself. Share it with everyone you know! Christ is risen! He was born in a manger and defeated death forever! How can we not be excited?

Don't hold it in any longer. Go. Tell everyone!

Gifting

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 NIV

If you know me then you know I am not very good at gift giving. For those of you who have been privy to it, all I can say is I'm sorry and I have the receipt. For those not yet acquainted, I've made a note to buy gift cards. Lucky for me those I gift to love me and are willing to overlook this tiny flaw. But I digress. These days if you don't like a gift or it's not right for you, most are easily returnable, or for the really brave...re-gifted. For the record, I don't because it would go horribly wrong. But again I digress.

So aren't we really lucky that God knows how to give perfect gifts, like his only son? We don't have to return anything God gives us. In fact, he wants us to pass it on, to re-gift in the grandest of gestures. His gifts are always perfect, right on time, and always the right size. It will always be the most perfect thing we need in our life at that time.

So this Christmas, let God be in charge of your gifting. When he fills your heart with joy and peace, make sure to re-gift those as soon as possible.

You Are the Reason

13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 NIV

Go ahead, admit it. This is hard. Once someone has proven to be untrustworthy or has wronged you in some way, it's hard to forgive them. It's hard to not keep thinking about what they did every time they mess up again.

But even though it's hard, I like the way the last line is written...forgive as God forgave us. He gave his only son as payment for our sins. Jesus entered this world as a baby and left this world the savior. I saw a saying on a church sign that read, you are the reason for Christmas; God loves you. How true. God loves us so much that he sent Jesus to be our savior.

So as hard as it may be, we must forgive. We must move past it. Just imagine how much better this world would be if we all did this.

Safe Space

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; Matthew 5:44 KJV

This verse both humbles me and gives me hope. If Luke Skywalker can have faith that there is good in his father and take Obi Wan's advice to heart, then I am capable of praying for those who don't like me very much. Luke didn't give in to the dark side. It peaked it's head a little and then he learned.

I too can learn. I am humbled because I know of one person who just doesn't like me..at all...to the point they take it out on those around me. I feel responsible, gutted and utterly bereft at the thought I could have injured someone that much. But did I? Did I cause injury or is it truly them as I was taught to believe growing up? I live my life attempting to make people feel welcome, unjudged and safe around me. But I am only human and it could be I said or did something that made them feel aweful. If so then I am truly sorry. But if not, and I never find out why, then I am to follow this verse and pray for them. It doesn't say I have to like them. I must forgive and pray and love them with God's love. It's not the same thing.

So today I will summon every ounce of the force within me, God's love, and apply it to my prayers for that one. I also pray that if you struggle with this you too can find peace and humility in this verse. Let Jesus' words take hold of your heart. He will honor your prayer to be a safe space.

We Have Hope

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3‭-‬4 NIV

I read an article the other day about why we are shocked that people are shocked about the current allegations against men of power having abused women in some way. The reasoning was that as Christians we have hope that there is still salvation for even those we think are unredeemable. We see them through God's eyes and our hearts are saddened by the state of affairs. We have hope they will turn from their sin and give their hearts to God. Without this hope we become immune to that kind of news.

We have this hope because we have suffered and persevered. We have seen unimaginable tragedy, experienced extreme pain, and yet here we are. God has seen us through so we have hope for a future. This hope builds resilience.

In honor of the new Star Wars movie, to quote Princess Leia in Rogue One, we may have nothing else, but we have hope. Rebellions are built on hope. Families are nut on hope. Businesses are built on hope. It's what drives us to get up every morning.

So know that if you survived to where you are, you have hope.

Consequences

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV

This sounds so easy, right? Confess and move on. Let's make it right and just get past it. We will be forgiven so that's it. Not so fast. This verse does not absolve us of consequences for sin, just that we will be forgiven. There may still be ways we have to make it right and sometimes that means punishment for the offender.

There are times when we need to not seek those at fault. We just need to asknowledge the wrongdoing, correct the behavior and move on. But this still isn't completely without consequences because the person responsible knows who they are. They will feel remorse for what they've done. This is God's spirit reminding us who lives in our heart.

But it is good to remember that in order to move past sin and rid it from your life, acknowledging it is the first and best thing to do. Take it to God first.

Fake News

17 no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord. Isaiah 54:17 NIV

All over the news, the internet and social media are what are being called 'fake news' stories. People are accused in the court of public opinion before the facts are even known. Two sides both with proof they are right trying to disprove the other. Fake accounts asking for help. Fake stories with false facts not corroborated. No one is immune, not even those without fault.

Bring that same mindset home and things can get really rough at work, at home or at school. People are quick to blame others to avoid punishment or retribution.

But we have God's promise that as long as we are truthful, have inyegrity, and avoid the appearance of wrong doing that he will refute anyone who falsely accuses us. It's our heritage as his children, our birthright if we are born again. We don't have to be afraid of those who would try to lie against us. God is for us! Amen.

Heart Talk

2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2 NIV

You know what happened when I read this verse? I immediately thought "oh no, trouble is on the horizon." Why did I think that way? Because when you take a verse like tbis and apply it to your life, it can only mean trouble is coming and God is letting you know he will take care of you.

But guess what? God doesn't give you the spirit of fear. Satan does. God isn't telling you to hold onto your knickers because something bad is coming. Life happens. This is God's promise that when it does, he will be there. He will protect you. He will help you. You don't need to be afraid or automatically think something is going to go wrong. That's fear. That's satan. Don't let him do that to you.

Take hold of God's promise, tuck it away in your heart and when you need it, he will remind you.

Things

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33 NIV

People tend to focus on the "things" mentioned in this verse, to imply that if we trust God he'll give us what we want. That's not entirely true. The "things" talked about here are clothes, food, drink, and shelter. Jesus is talking about not worrying about what you need. God knows you need these things. We are to seek him first not earthly wares and comforts.

Life isn't comfortable. We all have sorrow, trouble, good days and bad days. Each day brings a chance to glorify God in all that we do and say. I regularly fall short. Lucky for me God already knows that too and is there to help me, not for my good but for his glory.

Be open to be used. Seek his will first and see how he moves in your life.

Big Brother

But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, Psalm 33:18 NIV

In our technological age, it seems everyone is watching us, recording everything we do and say. Cameras capture our every move. Traffic cams record the movement of vehicles and road conditions. We can't go anywhere where something isn't watching us. A little creepy maybe...big brother is watching and all that. Even Santa sees us when we're sleeping and knows when we're awake! But even the most advanced tech toys cannot capture everything.

But despite the many things tracking us, we can take comfort in knowing that God is always watching. He knows our hearts. He sees our actions before we act. We have hope in him that we cannot find in even the most advanced technology.

So lift your eyes to the hills and put your trust in the one who truly sees everything.

Building Blocks

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 NIV

I read an article today about the police looking for a woman wanted in a theft. They gave a description of her and showed a picture. Every single one of the comments had something horrible to say about how she looked.

Jessica Simpson, the singer, shared an Instagram picture of her and her 5 year old daughter on an outing to Sephora, the makeup store. Of course her daughter was trying on makeup...what little girl can't wait to play with makeup? Perfect strangers trolled her and said what an awful mother she was because she took her daughter to the makeup store.

This is a familiar story. More often than not, people hide behind usernames and fake profiles just to troll and make nasty comments on things that aren't even their business. Raising children in a technology and social media world required a few rules about using the web. Barring them from using it wasn't the answer, but rather teaching them to use it wisely. Our main rule: if you wouldn't say it or show it to a room full of strangers, don't put it online.

We also taught them that one golden rule: if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. How can we build others up if all we do is say how terrible they are and comment where it's not our business? We should use the internet for good, sharing God's love, acceptance and salvation. The internet is powerful. People can tweet and retweet all day long. Give them kind powerful words to share. Give them hope. Build them up.

Rocks and Words

“There is no one holy like the Lord ; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2 NIV

Do you have some days when you don't know what to pray for, how to pray, what to say to God? I mean, we have a dictionary full of words yet they all seem so pitiful when I pray. I hope I'm not alone. Some days we have victories, some not so much, or the victories are mixed in with sorrow. But to verbalize what we want or need or how we feel just seems so inadequate. God is holy! He can't be bothered by our petty lives.

But like any good parent God likes to hear from us no matter what we say. I suspect that any one of you wouldn't care what you talked about with a loved one as long as you talked. You care about them and what they are doing. And sometimes you would love to just sit with them, not saying anything.

That's how God is. So it doesn't matter whether or not you can express yourself. God knows your heart. Be honest. Be available. Be willing to listen. And then, make sure to praise him for being your rock.

I Will Help You

13 "For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear, I will help you." Isaiah 41:13 NIV

My heart was blessed to read this after my post from last night. It was confirmation to me that in obedience to what God has asked me to do, he is affirming that yes, He will help me. We do not need to fear, he will help. He will help you pass that final and pass your class. He will help you complete the project at work on time. He will help you raise the funds you need for necessary medical expenses. He will help with the details in bringing together the perfect wedding. He will help you choose the right appliance for your home. He will help you speak to your child about bullying. He will help you with your finances so that you can plan for your future. He will help find the perfect home for you or your loved ones. All these things and more that you worry about, that you care about, that sometimes cause fear in your life, he will help.

There is nothing in your life He won't help you with. There is nothing going on in your life that he is not concerned about. He loves you and is interested in everything you do. All you need to do is ask and have faith. My spirit is overwhelmed with the excitement of God's promises. I must have faith. I must be obedient. How can I not when I know he will help.

Obedience

1 "I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the Lord Almighty. Malachi 3:1 NIV

I want to start this post with an apology - to my readers, but mostly to God, asking for His forgiveness. You see, I don't write this blog for me or for my readers. I do it in obedience with what God impressed upon me to do to spend time with him. He meets us where we are... thank goodness...and he met me where I was - a very busy lady with a lot on my plate but who loves to write. And what better way to spend time with God than exploring what his word says about everyday life in my own words. And what better way to share them with others who may want the same thing - God's word applied to everyday life. But that life can get in the way; actually, I let that life get in the way and I have neglected my blog. I still ready my daily verse but I didn't dwell on it as much as I was. And what happened? Doubt crept in. Fear. Uneasiness.

But that's not much different than what the Israelites experienced, a lot it seems, and what gave the prophets like Malachi, Haggai and others lots to write about. They would lose their way occasionally, lose sight of the promises God had made because those promises weren't always immediate. They would become disobedient, thinking that God would still deliver because they were his chosen people after all, so why should they do what he said? He'll forgive them, slaughter their enemies and they'd be on their way. Not quite that easy, because in the meantime, their disobedience would cause pain, sorrow, doubt, anger, fear, fighting, you name it. Yes God would forgive them, yes he would deliver on his promises, but not without consequences in the meantime.

I was reminded this past week that God is faithful. All he asks is that we believe and have faith. Many times in the Old Testament you'll see where the Israelites begin to be disobedient, God would withdraw his protection. He promised a savior - if they would believe. He promised deliverance - if they would obey. He promised prosperity - if they would have faith. God wants to work miracles, and I know he still does today. Some are big, but most are small miracles that happen every day, most going unrealized by us. If God has given us a command, we must obey. We must have faith that he will fulfill the promise he's given to us. I still believe he will. I will do my best to obey (we're not perfect).

And when we have faith, the Lord will come to his temple - you. He will live in you and work through you. And that's what we as Christians should strive for.

Daily Briefing

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19 NIV

Picture it. Your daily work site. You have one employee who complains about something every day. Every. Single. Day. They ran out of paperclips. There's dirt in the wheels on their chair. Their computer is slow. Someone is too loud in the next cubicle. It's too cold. It's too hot. You probably know someone like this. You may not supervise them, but if you did I imagine you would begin dreading going to work or opening your email for fear of what they will complain about next. I'm not saying these people are wrong or bad, but we all know perpetually unhappy people.

So now think about your biggest problem, burden or sorrow right now. It may seem unbearable to you, and it may be for a human. But for God, he gladly will hear our cries every day. Even if it's the same thing that he already knows about. He's waiting, patiently. Like us, he doesn't tire of hearing us. He wants us to lay our burdens at his feet.

Let him hear your daily briefing.

No Thanks

Give thanks to the Lord , for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV

There's many reasons to be thankful. We are reminded in many ways especially at this time of year. But there are also days in which it is hard to be thankful. We don't feel lime thanking the Lord, not because we don't love him or were not grateful, but because of something we mi ght be going through. A lot of people have trouble with the holiday season. It's not a happy time for them. They need time to not be okay with the celebrations happening around them. They are going through unimaginable pain of which we know nothing and cannot comprehend. It could be recent. It could be lingering. It could be dealing with anxiety or other mental disorders that make it difficult to enjoy the season. Whatever it is, it could be keeping them from giving thanks.

And it's ok. Why? Because the last part of this verse tells us that God's love endures forever. His love is stronger than our pain. His love is harder than our pain. No matter how long we go without thanking him, no matter how much we rail against what's going on, he will be there. His love will endure, waiting for us, taking us where we are and how we are. He knows our hearts so we can be honest with him about how we feel, and we may not feel grateful. He understands and he will be waiting there when we're ready.

So this holiday season, meet people where they're at. Love them. Listen to them. Be that enduring love of God without expecting thanks.

Thanks for Past and Present

Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago. Isaiah 25:1 NIV

As we begin the holiday season I am like many others. I get excited about the shopping, the family gatherings and decorating. I still wonder and marvel when touring a light display. It makes me feel like a kid again. The warmth of the lights, the feeling of a fresh start in the new year all makes the holidays special. And knowing we celebrate God's perfect gift at Christmas makes it all the much more.

At thanksgiving and Christmas we give thanks for his gifts...peace, eternal life, salvation. And we give thanks for his blessings but we don't often reflect on what he will do. This verse calls us to a higher praise,  to not only thank God for what he has done buy what he will do. Woah. I don't have a crystal ball so how do I know what good things he will do in the future? We don't know for sure, but we can rest in the promise whatever he does will be wonderful. He already delivered on the promise of a savior as notes in Isaiah. So we can know that our future is secure in him.

So this holiday season give thanks for what God has done and what he will do.

It's All in a Meme

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. 1 Chronicles 29:13 NIV

This is a simple yet elegant command. Give thanks. It's perfect for the upcoming holiday. We should give thanks every day but the holidays are a great reminder of how much we really have to be thankful for. With all that's going wrong with the world and mankind, we still have so much.

There are lots of variations if this verse that circle the web on a daily basis. The memes and sayings have this one thing in common: be thankful, be grateful, appreciate what you have and who you have.

In this holiday season I pray you find more than just presents under the tree. I pray you find peace and thankfulness.

Just Say No

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, Titus 2:11‭-‬12 NIV

When I read this verse my immediate reaction was 'woah'. If things were bad during the time this book was written that the apostle needed to exhort Christ's followers to 'just say no', I can only imagine what he would think of our present age. It is so hard for this current generation to say no to umgodliness. The lines get more blurred everyday in the name of political correctness.

Self control is also quickly becoming a thing of the past. Rather than taking personal responsibility, people are prone to want others to 'save' them from themselves, making it someone else's problem or fault for what happens.

Both of these fly in the face of the exhortation we are given in the bible. We are to turn away from ungodliness and lead self controlled lives, understanding our own choices have consequences by which we must live. This is hard in any age, but seems to be particularly difficult in our present age.

But God is there to help. He has sent us his spirit to guide us if we will let him. So learn to just say no.

Withering Grass

For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 1 Peter 1:24 NIV

My yard is demonstrating the latter part of this verse very well. The grass is withering and the flowers have stopped blooming. I'm pretty sure it's me. I tend to have black thumbs. Oh, and I also kill fire so if you have a fire and need to put it out, call me to come play with it. It will die quickly. But I digress. We work hard to keep our yard groomed and watered and such. We try to do some nice landscaping too. We don't have a lot of time to putter in the yard so what we have is minimal. But come fall and winter, the grass is hopeless. It's brown and icky and almost gone in some spots.

Humans are like this too. Our souls may be eternal but our physical bodies are not. We are only here for a little while. We work hard to keep our minds sharp, our bones strong, and our muscles flexible. But the fall and winter of our lives will come and our bodies will wither.

But take heart. We have a future where there is no pain. No more calorie counting. No more hard core workouts. Our bodies can rest forever while our soul lives free in God's presence.

Take Heart

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16 NIV

I believe there are many lessons in this verse, at least 3. I'd like to focus on just one: do not lose heart. I needed this today before I knew I needed it and didn't realize God had provided before I needed it. My need is not yet met, but it will be. It's not time.

We've come to the point where my mother needs more care than she's currently getting. Care that is costly and like most aging seniors, the funds are limited. So we as a family must decide how best to take care of her needs without sacrificing our own future or current well being. That would help no one. I thought I'd found the answer yesterday only to be disheartened today when I got additional information. I did read this verse this morning but I focused on the latter half about being renewed in spirit even as we waste away physically.

But that wasn't the lesson I needed. God knew the information I would get today. He's reminding me he's got this, because frankly that's the only way I can face the decisions that we have to make. I have to believe he knows and he's going to provide for what we need, for what my mom needs.

So yes, many lessons but today I will take heart, not lose it. I will strengthen my spirit with his promise to provide for our needs. Thank you Lord. Amen.

Angry to Thankful

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34‭-‬35 NIV

Last night during the Country Music Awards show the theme of the night was love, unity and family. They honored those who lost their lives in the recent shootings and storms theybhave ravaged our country and shook our confidence to the core. Now is not the time for hatred or hopelessness. Now, more than ever, this verse is so timely.

I was reading an article today, and the person was talking about when he would start to feel anxious he would turn the thought around and say what he was thankful for. What an amazing little exercise! What if we all did that? What if, whenever we feel anxious or scared or angry, thar we turn the thought around and say what we are thankful for instead? Let's try: let's say you got angry at the repair shop because they overcharged you for an item they didn't repair. Instead of being angry, think about how thankful you are you have a car and the means to keep it running. Your attitude instantly changes and then you can work with the shop to get a refund. No fuss. No muss.

This is actively showing love to others. You may not have physical love for peiple, but God's love is shown in many ways. Living this concept is letting others know you follow Christ. So let's actively be thankful. You never know whose life you might touch.

The Sandbox Theory

Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin. Proverbs 13:3 NIV

In a world of social media and instant round the clock news coverage, this phenomenon is all too prevalent. I thought about it today while watching the construction of a new building out my window at work. I have watched for the last three weeks and really all I've seen them do is move dirt from one spot to another, load up dirt to remove from the site, and then dump a load of dirt in its spot. It looks like kids playing in a giant sandbox. Now I could take to social media and speculate that they do this to inflate construction costs or demonstrate how long it takes to justify bigger budgets, but that's all it would be...speculation. Those familiar with construction will know it takes a lot to prepare the site and if I took the time to ask, I'd probably learn a lot about why these big guys are playing in a giant sandbox. So it would do me no good to speak rashly or without thought.

It is too easy to assume what we see is what it is. If we don't know the full story or circumstances then we need to hold our thoughts. Commenting on photos or stories that we know nothing about only stirs up harsh feelings.

So the next time you think it's just kids playing in the sandbox, take the time to figure out the real story.

Look and Learn

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16‭-‬17 NIV

I've been learning a lot at my job,  doing something I've never done before. It's taking a lot of learning, correction and instruction...more than I care to get some days. But each day I learn a little more and it gets a little easier. And now that I've learned it I will use what I've learned next time and be able to get it right the first time. At least that's the plan. It's what it takes to be successful. Einstein and Edison made it look easy but they needed lots of instruction and correction too.

Like them, we need lots of good instruction and training. The world needs it, desperately. It needs God's love and his instruction. How can we ever be succesful doing God's work if we don't learn? And we won't learn if we don't try. And if we try we will certainly fail at times. Then we learn and move on.

Don't let the correction or instruction deter you. Soak up God's word and learn!

Faith and Sorrow

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 NIV

In light of today's events in Texas, I offer this as a prayer for peace. Those precious lives lost lived by faith, as evidenced by their attendance this morning, gathering with fellow believers, as we are encouraged to do. Some days it's not about the victory even though as Christians we like that part of the story. Some days we live with the hurt and sorrow and it takes every ounce of faith we have to walk through.

But God is always with us and it is time like these he will carry us. May God grant you all peace.

All The Faith

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3 NIV

Although this verse makes an excellent point about humility, I focused in on the last part about faith. It says that God has already given us faith. He has distributed faith to each of us. So if that's true, then why do we think we need more faith? Hasn't God already given us what we need? Doesn't he know what we need and provide for us before we even ask? Yes! His word echoes that throughout. So now you know you have all the faith you need to believe. Believe in his son who died for you and me. Believe he can and will provide for your needs. Believe you can do all things he asks of you. Believe that you are on the perfect path for his purpose. He's already given you all the faith you need. You just need to put it into action

Good In, Good Out

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

One of my all-time favorite films, "Steel Magnolias", has a lone everyone loves to repeat: 'If you don't have anything nice to say, come sit by me.' It's hysterical in context and be honest, you know someone this. We've been taught since we were little that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. But no one ever said we couldn't think it. That is, unless they understood this verse.

Take captive every thought. So all those things we thought and knew we shouldn't say, yep, it's still not good. Would it be obedient to Christ? Would it be something he would say? Again be honest, probably not.

Keeping quiet sometimes is hard enough, but keeping your thoughts quiet? That's entirely something else. But as we see from this text, we must strive to make our thoughts also towards God. So use that mind for good. Put in good, get good out.

Start and Stop

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:18 NIV

I'm at a training conference for work this week. Although I've worked in this industry before it's been a while so things are new. I have some preconceived notions that are getting challenged. I'm also learning new ways to do my work. But if I don't believe that that this new info can help or is necessary, I've done myself a disservice, and to the people I try to help.

This is a very simplified human explanation of this verse. If we don't believe we are done already. We are stopped before we even get started. God only requires us to believe in his son. When we do, our future is secure. Let your soul be set free to live.

Rafiki's Lesson

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 NIV

Been here. Done this. Both as a receiver and a giver. It hurts both ways. It is so unpleasant even I want to hide from difficult conversatikns. It's human nature. In class the other day I had a student call some of his classmates jerks. I had to correct him and have him apologize. It didn't matter why. We don't talk to people that way,  especially in a martial arts atmosphere. We teach respect above all else. It upset him and me but it had to be done. He apologized and we went on with class.

Life happens and we mess up. That's a given. What's important is that we own it and then learn from it. The worst thing we can do is to make the same mistake again. It means we didn't learn. And oh we do that too. It's ok. It will one day give us peace that we know the right thing to do and to help those coming behind.

So take a lesson from Rafiki in the Lion King: yes the past can hurt, but we can either run from it or learn from it.

Young and Old

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV

I will admit it: I'm guilty. I tend to have a low opinion of Millenials and feel they don't have the values or experience to do the job. And it's true that some dont. But it's not because of their age. It's how they were raised. Well, maybe a little bit because of their age. But I was young and silly once too. Some days now I'm just silly because I can't claim to be young anymore.

Someone posted to FB today that us older gals should embrace the younger generation. They come with a spark and zest for life and we can pair that with our experience and wisdom. What a combination that can be! And this verse tells us that young people can be the life and pulse of the church, leading others to Christ by their example. But they need mentors, so that's us older generations.

Let the young people breathe life into your soul while you breathe wisdom into theirs.

Work Hard for the Money

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24 NIV

I work hard at my job. I work hard at my hobbies. I work hard raising my children and maintaining relationships. I bet you do too. Life is hard work. There's not many who can sail through life never working for what they want. Yes there are exceptions, but for the most part people work hard at daily living.  And even though we know an honest day's work is good for the soul, it's all that more refreshing and surprising when we get a reward with very little effort.

Which is why I love this verse. God only requires us to believe in his son and we will be saved. We must simply have faith. We don't have to work our way into heaven. God is not concerned about what we can do but what we are willing to allow him to do through us.

Having faith doesn't require sweat equity. Let God do the work through you.

Making it Count

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV

The world needs more of this right now. What if we all lived as though we were eternal beings whose existence here is a prelude to our eternity with our creator? Well it is. And we should live each day to the fullest. Make each day count for the one who created us so that others will want what we have.

Eternal life is ours if we just believe the one who sent his only son. His only son. I have three daughters and can't imagine not having them around. I have 1.5 sons in law and would be horrified if they weren't in my life anymore. I have 3 beautiful grandkids and i wouldn't trade them for nothing, especially not to redeem someone else. So I can't imagine God sending his son for me, and you and every other person that has been and will ever be.

So let's live like the redeemed eternal souls that we are. Make each day count.

Lights and More Lights

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 NIV

As part of our Halloween yard setup, we needed to purchase a spotlight to illuminate our pirate skeleton. So this morning we went to Home Depot for a spotlight. We walked into a Christmas wonderland. Most of the Halloween stuff was gone and Christmas items had been stocked. They had lots of different lights, projection shows, yard electrical stakes and more, all for lighting up our yards at Christmas. They even had a Star Wars projection light kit...oh yes they did. It almost made its way into my shopping basket. But I digress.

Lights. Lots of lights. Every creature you can think of lit and animated to provide a show for passersby. There's just something about walking among Christmas lights. There's something magical that happens. There's warmth and safety, even if the light is illuminating a pirate skeleton. Our eyes are drawn to the lights. That's why resorts and restaurants have photos of their businesses taken at night when the lights are all on. Pools lit at night are a big draw.

So if we find these types of light appealing, God's light is so much more. His light is never dimmed. The bulb never has to be changed. Rain or shine or dark of night his light is forever, driving away the darkness. In it there is warmth and safety. Stay in his light. Let it lead you, let it keep you safe.

Sin and Cancer

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 NIV

Many people quote this verse for physical healing, which I do believe it can and does reference. But I also believe in reading this verse and thinking about it today that it's referencing our healing from sin and death. And look at how it refers to our healing: we HAVE been healed. Not we will be if we pray enough. Or we will be if we do enough good. No. By Jesus' death on the cross he bore our sins for all eternity. We have been healed. We are no longer slaves to sin and death.

Think about what this means! No matter what we might mess up, no matter how much we sin, the price has already been paid. We are free. We are healed.

Sin is like cancer, taking over the good cells, eating away at you little by little till there's no good cells left. Sin feeds on more sin and the deep despair we find ourselves in. This is what Jesus came to heal. This is what he did for us. We are forgiven. We are forever free.

Praise him today for this gift we can never repay.

Post Production

Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:21 NIV

Most of you know that I am a breast cancer survivor. My story is not unique; I know many women who have battled the disease. Some have won; others have lost. But we know the battle goes on ensuring research continues to increase those on the winning side. So I don't mind sharing my story. I was honored to represent our taekwondo academy as they host this year's Relay for Life kickoff. The local tv station sent a newscaster to run a story on me and two other students. Tonight he came to film me taking class, sparring and breaking boards. He also interviewed my husband and I'm sure he's interviewed others at our academy.

Now he will go back to the studio and weed out the bad shots, adjust some of the footage, rearrange the segments and put together the final product. He can't get to a nice shiny news story ready for primetime without getting rid of the footage that doesn't work or is inferior in any way. A movie director goes through the same process in post production. All the scenes have been shot, lines have been said. Now he has to go to the studio and spend countless hours putting together the final product. And to get a return on the investment, it better be good enough to make audiences want to see it.

Post production is what we need to do in our lives. Get rid of the nasty pieces that don't work well. Get rid of the inferior parts that keep us from being whole. Abide by the teachings we've learned through the years and with humility set out to do God's work. Do what he's put us here to do. We're not much good in the rough. God works his post production magic in us to get to the finished product.

So let God take you to his studio. Once he's done with you, the part you'll play will outshine any academy award.

If I Can, You Can

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15 NIV

I love the conversational tone of this verse. It's like, come over here and let me tell you something. It's also an acknowledgement of the writer's own shortcomings over the course of his life. He's learned a thing or two since then and wants to pass it on. He's saying that if Jesus can save him, Jesus can save you too.

We say these types of things to encourage people to not give up. If I can lose weight, you can too. If I can do this exercise, you can too. If I can learn this job, you can too. It's a word of encouragement that no one is so far gone to sin that Jesus can't reach us. God's love can find us anywhere.

So I'll echo what he said: if God can save me, he can save you too. He'll meet you right where you are.

WWJD

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 NIV

This is a call for excellence. If we were to stop and review what we say and do through the lens of Christ, I have a feeling the world might actually become a better place. If we worked at our jobs the way Jesus would. If we raised our children the way Jesus would. If we treated our spouses the way Jesus would. If we spoke to others the way Jesus would. What a world we'd have!

Not too long ago there was a campaign of sorts: WWJD. What would Jesus do? It was a call to ask yourself that question in every situation. Would Jesus go to work and browse the internet all day long? Would Jesus break traffic laws and then berate the cop who stopped him? Would Jesus come home from work and yell at his wife because dinner isn't ready? Or not play with his children because he's tired? Would Jesus treat people differently if they looked or talked differently than he did?

If you were to ask yourself WWJD in every day situations I bet you would act and speak differently. We are only humam so I'm sure at times when we get stressed or hurt or angry or worried that we might not act very Christ like. But we should always strive to be even if we fail. It's better to have tried and failed then to not try at all.

So let's bring back WWJD. This verse gives us the perfect starting point.

Good and Bad

For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Deuteronomy 30:16 NIV

Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. Life gives and takes with no quarter given regardless of your station in life. Rich, poor, law abiding, law breaking, man, woman...none of us are immune to pain or blessings. A lot of people might read this verse and think all they have to do is love God and be obedient and all will be good. That's not always how it works. If it did, all pastors and missionaries would be rich and famous. But many struggle to pay their bills just like lay people.

So why do it? Why be a Christian and follow Christ? Because God has promised us possession of the land we will enter....in eternity. We will have eternal life through him. It doesn't matter how long we stay in this earth. At some point we will join our Lord for forever. That's what he's promised. Not beds of roses here, but streets of gold in heaven.

I'd say that's a wonderful inheritance.

Give What You Get

Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 1 Thessalonians 5:15 NIV

This was the daily verse on Friday but since I didn't write an entry Friday night I looked back tonight to see the verses for today and yesterday. This one rings true for me today. Our TKD academy is hosting the Relay for Life kickoff and I was interviewed today as a breast cancer survivor. I was asked about my fighting style in TKD. I said I was aggressive but predictable because I'm not quick enough to adapt on the fly. I have to think it through first before I act. But I can also give as good as I get, protect myself and stand my ground. This gives a person a certain level of confidence. I could easily retaliate against someone who sets out to do me harm.

But this verse is stronger than any amount of fight I've got in me and more important to me than any number of bars on my belt. I may have to one day defend myself or someone I love but I would not escalate it or go after them. It makes no sense to sue just because you think you can. Or treat someone else in the same bad manner they treated you. It's ok to know your limits. It's ok to walk away. It's not ok to lower yourself to their level. Be above it. Be better. Pray for them.

I can give as good as I get. Self control is choosing not to.

Stress Test

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord , supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:18‭-‬19 NIV

I sent this verse to my daughter this morning. She had a test today and it was really stressing her out. I knew this verse was perfect. She had studied. She had done what she could. I knew she needed God to take away the stress and free her mind so she could do well.

We all get anxious, stressed, worried. These are natural human emotions. And God understands we will feel them. He did not make us void of emotion. What he wants is for us to know we don't have to bear the burden ourselves. He is there to help. We do not need to entertain negative thoughts. God's light can drive them out and sustain us when we need it most.

So the next time worry or stress tries to take hold, ask God to lift the burden.

Thanksgiving

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 NIV

We can all use more peace in our life. But my favorite part about this verse is the last sentence: be thankful. We don't see a lot of that these days. Someone gives a compliment, they get called out for  harrassment. Someone gives a gift, it gets thrown back at them for various reasons. Someone gives to a charity and they get sued for more. It's a very unthankful society we face. It's also hard to teach our children to be thankful in a throw away world where excess is the word of the day.

Be thankful. It seems like such a small thing but it can be difficult. Be thankful for your job, even if you don't like it. Be thankful for your home, even if it's not the newest or biggest on the block. Be thankful for the family you have around you, even if you don't always get along. Life is precious and precarious. We just don't know what the next day holds. We are not always in control.

As we move towards our American holiday of Thanksgiving, we should actively think of something we are thankful for every day. Let it remind us to understand just how blessed we really are. Today I tweeted that I was thankful for my team of doctors who care more about their patients than the insurance. That is something to be grateful for. That's huge.

So what are you thankful for today? Let God know and tell him thank you.

To Life

I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. Psalm 119:93 NIV

I didn't read my daily verse until after my doctors appointment this morning. If I had read it before I may have saved myself additional worry, but we puny humans are just so good at outright ignoring the signs God sends us. Now that I'm all clear I can tell you I had a little health scare. After going through cancer twice, you tend to be hyper sensitive to changes in your health and body. I thought I felt a lump under my arm. I went to my primary care who referred me to my plastic surgeon  (who did my reconstruction) who then after talking with me about what I've felt thought I should talk to an oncologist about getting a PET scan. Enter me officially freaking out. So I ventured to my original surgeon today to see about next steps.

For the past week I have entertained every scenario in my head. Any type of cancer is bad news but if it was in my bones it was very bad news. I could not fathom what life would be like, what effect it would have on my family. I was distraught to say the least. But everywhere I turned God was letting me know not to worry. Did I listen? Yeah....nah, at least not very well. Did I pray? Yes I did.

Enter today and the verse. God's laws have preserved my life. Walking in his ways, abiding by his word, he has kept me safe. For what reason I don't know. It may be to simply let others know what he's done for me and to help give hope to others.

All I know is I have the all clear from the doctor. I keep up with my health. It's important to do so. It's  also important to listen to what God is saying. I spent so much time worrying with no result. I am a survivor and to thrive I must keep vigilant, keep healthy for life.

And to thrive in spirit I must pray and study God's word for life. So here's to life.

Force for Good

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16:24 NIV

This is a verse often taken out of context. People believe that if they ask for a Corvette or a mansion or dame, and ask it in Jesus' name that they'll have it. The disciples were asking about the meaning behind Jesus' teachings. Up until this point they had been asking Jesus, but he was leaving them to ascend to heaven. They wondered how they were going to get answers to their questions,  not how they were gonna get wealth or fame or fortune.

After having now seen the second trailer for the next Star Wars movie, the force is seen as something to use. It can be used for good or bad. We've seen it used for bad and not end well. The force is not something you use to get what you want for yourself. It is to be used to help guide you and to help others.

So it is in your relationship to God. He's not to be used to get what you want. He's not a genie in a bottle. He's the almighty, the alpha, the omega, the creator, worthy of our praise and thirsty for our company. He wants to help us so that we may help others.

So ask your questions, ask it in Jesus' name so the father might hear you and answer. You only need to listen.

Fast and Furious

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8 NIV

We just watched Fast and Furious 8. We didn't see it in theatres so I didn't know what to expect. It was fast and furious alright. Without giving away the plot, one woman thinks she can control everything, to 'play God' as it were. I'm now watching Jurassic World (again). I love the franchise. Again it's one person trying to control nature... play God. We see this same plot over and over again in movies, and unfortunately in life.

People, us puny humans, think we can control everything. There's much we can because we have free will, but God is the maker of all, our creator, the true alpha and omega. It's time to give him all praise and honor..he is worthy to be praised.

Be Healed

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 NIV

I got nothing. I mean do we really do this, with honesty and full faith? I bet not. In fact I can guarantee you we dont. Why not? Because we are afraid people will judge us or dislike us or be angry with us if we confess our sins to them. We think then they won't pray for us, especially of we've hurt someone. And we do have to face consequences.

But those who love us will forgive us, and they'll pray earnestly for us. Then we can be healed from the foothold that sin has taken in our lives. Healing isn't always physical. It's spiritual as well.

So let those who love you pray over you. Don't be embarrassed. Let your story be told so others may learn.

Trust and Obey

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5‭-‬6 NIV

Weddings can be a big deal. They are a big deal. Even small, intimate ceremonies can get contentious. Everyone comes out of the woodwork with opinions. This is not to say that's a bad thing, but for the bride and groom...it is after all their affair...it can be a bit overwhelming. Add in the pricetag of even a courthouse ceremony with backyard BBQ, and you've got yourself a little bit of stress. This is no way to start a life together,  nor is it something you want to burden your relatives with. Add in daily life and it's no wonder we can get so easily stressed.

Lately God has provided me with numerous reminders to not worry and take everything to him in prayer. From my daily verse, to postings by friends on social mefia, to the sign at the church. Good vibes only...as a song says. If I were to lean on my own understanding of all the things on my life I probably would mess it up somewhere along the way. God sends us people, verses, sayings, postings, etc to speak to us. We need to listen and obey.

So I'm obeying. I'm praying over my daughter's upcoming wedding, not just to bless their marriage, but to seek God's help in the decisions to be made prior to. I know he cares and I know he listens when we ask.

Do Good and Share

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 NIV

I am in tears. God still answers prayers. My proof? I thought I had my devotional for this verse already thought out. A friend messaged me a story about listening to and obeying God. I almost didn't watch the video prior to writing this, but I clicked over to watch. It's a beautiful story about a man obeying God's call to buy milk and give it to a complete stranger for reasons unknown at the time. At the end of the video it asks you to share it with others. Now I'm not usually the one to share it. I read it and like it and move on. So I clicked over to write my devotional, and low and behold I'm reminded of God's word for today: do good and share with others!

God is listening! He's working in us even if we don't want to acknowledge it all the time. He just wants our obedience. There are so many things that cause us daily strife and worry. God knows! And he's ready to help if we but listen.

I'm ready. If I wasn't before, I'm ready now. I may not even like what he's going to ask me to do, but I must be obedient. I only ask he gives me the strength I need.

Hear my prayer. Answer my plea. Amen.

Eatin, Workin or Sleepin

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. Proverbs 17:28 NIV

I think it would be wise for most of us to put this into literal use, like today, right now. It reminds me of a scene in Pure Country, starring George Strait. He's eating breakfast with a family, and the old man just sits silently, eating his food. George's character keeps trying to engage him in conversation but he says nothing. Then, when the rest of the group leaves the old man says, "that's what's wrong with this whole country. People yappin about this or that when they oughta be eatin,  workin,  or sleepin."

In a world where everything you say is on display, splashed across newsfeeds, social media sites and blogs, it's important to keep in mind that your audience is the world. What you say reflects you as a person. As a Christian, what you say reflects God. If what people see and hear turns them off, how can you show them God's love?

So maybe we should practice that old adage: if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. There is enough negative energy to power a hundred death stars; we don't need to add to the noise.

So the next time you feel something coming on, get back to eatin, workin or sleepin.

In Time of Sorrow

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. Psalm 22:14 NIV

This isn't the daily verse that came up for today. With the news coming out of Las Vegas, I searched for a verse that described how I was feeling and how I thought others must be feeling.

Love one another. Lift each other up. Leave nothing left unsaid or undone. There may not always be tomorrow.

I love you all.

Heart and Mind

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 NIV

I love the simplicity of this verse. God doesn't require fancy offerings or lavish ceremonies for us to be saved and be one of his forever. But we humans have a way of mucking things up.

We can say we are saved and believe that Jesus is Lord all day long. People might actually believe us. We can fool lots of people with what we say. We can say we know what our job is, know how we need to help people, or know what someone needs. But the truth may be far from it. What we know may be tested and then we are found out. We need to ask what people need, ask questions about what we need to do, so that when we are tested, we can do what must be done.

When our time here is done we sure don't want to be found not to have believed in our heart that Jesus is the risen son of God. Don't be like those that worship with their mouth but their heart is far from God. We must do what is right and honest and true.

So asking Jesus to be your savior is easy. And he will give you the strength to face whatever co.es next. Just make sure your head and heart are on board.

Good Purpose

for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:13 NIV

I had a bit of extra time this morning so I read the whole chapter of Philippians 2. It's very uplifting and teachable. There's a part of the verse that calls Jesus' followers to not act in their own interests like the world does, but to reach out and help others and act in their best interests. In a world about me, me, me it's refreshing to know that as Christians we have God's teachings to guide us so that we act accordingly.

But I wanted to focus on the last part of this verse: to fulfill His good purpose. It reminds us that we are not here for us. We are here for him and his purpose. His purpose is to have as many come to believe in him as possible. We accomplish this work in many ways. Sometimes it's having a good attitude at work while others are complaining. Other times it's sharing your experiences in order to help others. We help with prayer, giving and helping. There are many ways to share God's love.

So how will you set yourself apart to be used for God's good purpose?  Use me Lord for your will.

Fear and Safety

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. Proverbs 29:25 NIV

We live in a world where we fear man, where we are afraid of our fellow humans. Power hungry leaders threatening annihilation. Domestic terrorist groups threatening civil war. Religious zealots threatening certain destruction of all who don't believe their way. And last but not least, the person down the hall, down the street or down state who might be offended by what we say or believe. I don't say any of this to anyone's surprise. It's also not new to the 21st century. These things have been happening since the dawn of time.

So it's no wonder our stress levels are higher than in years past. It's stressful just waking out your door in the morning. Which makes it that much more important to know that the God of peace is on your side. This verse says he will keep you safe. Your soul is valuable to him and he will ensure you are able to do exactly what he's called you to do.

So when you get up tomorrow and get ready to start your day, thank God for having it under control and for keeping you safe.

All the Noise, Noise, Noise

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV

Some verses speak to me right away; others I dwell on during the day and as I'm reflecting back on my day, I see how God was speaking life to me all during the day. This verse spoke to me right away, but the world got in the way and changed how I view the message from today. How? News articles. Yep - those pesky pop-ups when you're perusing the daily news online. The one that caught my eye was a 'now trending' article on MSN health about a new study just published linking a skin condition to a higher risk of Alzheimer's. The condition? Rosacea. Yeah, that's what I wanted to hear today. For all the doom and gloom going around, all the uncertainty, all the strife, I needed to read that article. I have rosacea! I've dealt with it most of my adult life. And my mother has a form of dementia, not necessarily Alzheimer's and it wasn't 'early onset'. My mother kept her mind active her whole life. She was resourceful, smart, always reading and learning new things. I understand she has diabetes which has probably contributed, but I never thought in a million years she of all people would get dementia.

So then there's me - ack! No doctor I've talked to even knows how rosacea starts, what causes it or what causes breakouts. I've learned over the years what works and what doesn't, but it's always there. Now along with a familial history of diabetes and heart disease, I get a slightly elevated chance for Alzheimer's. Not how I pictured me in my golden years. So of course I looked into another article about how to lower your risk for all kinds of conditions, including forms of dementia.

As I was reading that last article, I thought about my daily verse and that's when I realized God has already taken care of it. Ain't he something? Freedom isn't just about doing what you want or having the ability to do what you want. It's freedom from worry, from pain controlling you, from stress, from fears about what may happen tomorrow, next week or 50 years from now. As the spirit of the Lord dwells in us, we dwell in him, and in him is peace and freedom. Real freedom. I don't need to stress about what may or may not happen in the future. I can prepare today, do my best to take care of myself, do my best at my job, do my best with our finances, do my best taking care of our children, do my best at being a friend. Then today will be over and I start again tomorrow. Taking each day as it comes and making each day count. In that alone there is a sense of freedom and relief. Knowing God is there to help and catch me adds a level of peace my human brain can't even understand but somehow does.

Tune out the noise from the world and listen to the One who created the world. He's all the news you need.

Planners Plan

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9 NIV

My first thought: boom. Mic drop. There it is in black and white. We can plan all we want, but God will put us where we need to be.

I recently changed jobs. I had several reasons and did my due diligence by adding up the pros and cons. It wasn't a snap decision and it was almost a year in the making. I desperately wanted out of where I was; God was having none of it. He was teaching me. There were things I needed to know and understand before I could move on. In my pain and stress, God was there holding me up and letting me know it would be ok. He also knew I loved my work, so I would need to get to a place where I could let it go.

So I planned. And planned and planned and planned. I added up my new salary and how it could help. I looked at new career paths and what I could be happy doing. But God needed me to know he was in control. He would put me where he wanted when he wanted.

So if you're like me and a planner, plan away. Just build into your plan enough time for God to do his work on you.

Fire Fuels

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. Proverbs 16:6 NIV

With love, sin is atoned for. With love, sin can no longer have a hold on you. With love. Not with yelling. Not with cursing. Not with strife. Not with violence. With love. Sin cannot feed on love. Much like we know cancer feeds and grows on sugar, sin grows on anger and hatred. It fuels the fire within and stokes the flames so that it rears its ugly head.

But love quenches the fire. God's love pierces the heart and pulls out the anger and fear and oppression of sin so that it no longer holds you captive. His light allows compassion and patience to live and thrive.

It's what we need in our world. More love, less anger. Be the one to quench the fire, not stoke the flames.

Armageddon

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4 NIV

I watched Armageddon tonight. We watched Independence Day last night. And all week we've been reading articles about how the world was ending today or it was the beginning of the end. If we do not know God's peace, this information could make us worry. There's plenty of voices loudly decrying the end of the world, the end of humanity, the end of freedom. We can listen to those but a better idea is to listen to the still, small voice that comes from the one who created the world. I think he would know when it will end.

This verse reminds us that God's words were written for our education and to give us hope for our future. Only God knows when he will return for his people. Only God knows his plans for the transformation of humanity. So why would we listen to fallible humans who only use a tenth of their brain power? Let's listen to the creator, who gives us hope and a future.

Take a Nap

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1 NIV

It's Friday night and I've enjoyed dinner and a movie at home with my family. It's been a long week. After about 6 weeks learning my new job and slowly getting accustomed to the work, this week got really busy. It's a good busy and I don't mind hard work and lots of it. I'll come home and work hard too, teaching and taking classes, preparing dinner, cleaning up and taking care of our household. We all have a lot on our plates. Some have more than one job or take care of multiple family units. We live in a very busy culture and a little hard work never hurt anyone.

But we also need rest. Our bodies are not made to function without it. Even God rested after spending six days creating the world. I'd call that a well deserved rest day. In order to find the rest we need and to be able to rest fully and completely, we must have the peace that only God can give. If we rest in him we need not worry about politics, nature events, financial crashes, or forgetting to respond to that email. God is above it all and so we can find the peace we need to rest.

So let the world rage on. God is in control. It's time for a nap.

Songs of Praise

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 NIV

God's word doesn't need our help. This verse makes my heart happy and so I think I'll leave it right here, perfect as it is.

Praise him when life goes right.
Praise him when life goes wrong.
Praise him in the midst of pain.
Praise him in the midst of joy.
Praise him on a good day.
Praise him on a bad day.

Let your heart sing praises to the one who brings us eternal life.

Underrated

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Isaiah 53:3 NIV

Every day around the world people are undervalued, underpaid, underestimated. You've probably had it happen to you. I've had it happen to me and to people I know. Humans can be very selfish, self-centered, and self-indulgent. It's why we turn away from situations that are hard to take in. We believe that if we don't see it we won't think about it, and then it won't hurt our hearts.

But no matter what's happened to us, Jesus knew this pain first hand. He experienced the ultimate in being underestimated. People had no idea what he was capable of. Even when he performed miracles they attempted to disprove him, which goes to show that even if were to perform miracles, people would still be skeptical. We are afraid of what we can't explain or what is stronger or better than us. It's human nature. Jesus experienced it even though he was above it.

So the next time you feel underappreciated, ask yourself how Jesus would have handled it.

Federal Regulations

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV

Undergoing a federal audit or monitoring is nothing to put lightly. I've done them for years now and no matter how much you think you know, there's always something to learn or to fix or to make better. One thing is for sure: the regulations are the end all, be all. What they say goes. Doesn't matter whether you read them online or print them out, they are always the same. You can count on them if you ever have a question about what you should or should not do. It doesn't mean they don't change, they do, but not often. When I'm asked a question, I ask a question in return: what do the regs say.

So upon reading this today, this verse was very satisfying to me as I thought about a physical description to liken God's steadfastness too. Our God IS God. He is. Not was. Not might be. He is. And he stands faithful throughout all generations.  He is always there, keeping his promises to those who love him. He is. He is faithful to forgive. He is. He can be counted on to never change.

God is the true end all, be all. Federal regs may come and go, but God stands forever.

Perseverence

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 NIV

Giving up. Giving in. Quitting. These are options that seem easy, especially when the going gets tough. Our academy participated in a martial arts tournament this past weekend. I saw some students just quit in the middle of their form or during a sparring match. They didn't have it in them to finish. I also saw some keep fighting through and finish even if they didn't win. For some who kept on going, they received a medal, even if they didn't place. It signifies that they didn't quit. All their training and hard work stood for something. Athletes of all disciplines know that hard work does pay off if you can fight through the times where someone else was better or endure an injury.

Here on earth we may win a medal or even 15 minutes of fame for persevering. But eternity with the king awaits those who push through what life throws at us. It can be hard some days to keep going, but we must. God will help us through anything. We only need to call on him.

So the next time you feel like giving up, remember that God didn't give up on you.

Respect for the Master

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” John 14:21 NIV

Over the past two days we watched as competitors of all ages and ranks put their skills to the test at our taekwondo tournament. Many many hours of hard work, training and creativity went into preparing for the tournament. It's a dedication known to athletes of all disciplines, not just martial arts. We also watched high rank students test for the next rank, and were privileged to watch one school owner test for the rank of Master. Years of training and hard work warrant a respect that's not common among the general population. When he speaks, you answer yes sir. When you ask him a question, you address him as sir or master. To do less would be a sign of disrespect. If you respect him you will address him properly, following the rules of order.

So God too warrants a respect for his omniscience. He is the alpha and omega. There is none other. If you respect him and love him you will follow his rules of order. Disrespecting his law, especially on purpose, would indicate you do not fully embrace who he is.

Respect for the one true Master and maker is warranted. If you love him, keeping his commandments will be easy. You will want to give him the respect he is owed.

All That Energy

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28 NIV

At this moment in time I think I would love to never grow tired or weary. I love working hard and feeling that victory tired at the end of the day. It gives me that feeling of accomplishment. But after 3 or 4 hours at a martial arts tournament, the victory tired is more like victory busted. It's tough to compete and work a tournament.  As a high rank student and instructor you are pulled ten ways to none. You're helping students, judging rings, cheering on your teammates and then cleaning floors or putting up mats. It's 2 days of non stop. And it's awesome. But it wears us down and come Sunday, that's it...we're done.

I'm so glad God isn't like that. He may have rested on the 7th day after creation, but I think that was more for creation's benefit than his. God doesn't take naps. He doesn't take Sundays off when the weekend's been too hard. He always shows up pressed and dressed and ready to work. His omniscience is such that we cannot even fathom what it might be like to have never ending energy. Well, ok, just watch 7 year old little boys...they have energy we should bottle up and sell. But even they run out eventually. God never does.

He is everywhere. He is in everything. Let his strength and energy take you through when yours is gone.

Franklin and Edison

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. John 1:9 NIV

Franklin and Edison had no idea how much we would appreciate them many many years after their discoveries that gave us the ability to switch on a light bulb whenever we needed it. We've become so accustomed to electricity that we almost can't function without it. True, there are people who know how to "rough it", but at some point they'll benefit from electricity. Having light at night is comforting because you will always know where you're going. Flashlights guide you. Lamps give reading light. Fluorescent lights brighten our kitchen for cooking. Light brings warmth, comfort and peace to otherwise cold and dreary nights. Just think about sitting around a campfire on a chilly evening and you can feel the warmth permeating your soul.

John wrote about Jesus being the one true light of the world. He brings peace, warmth, guidance, and comfort to everyone. Just like that campfire or cozy reading light, Jesus shines to dispel the cold and darkness. Where he is, no darkness can penetrate. If we feel admiration towards Edison for inventing the lightbulb, we should feel overwhelming love and adoration for Jesus who shines brighter than any bulb Edison could have imagined.

In the aftermath of a hurricane like Irma or Harvey, we get a taste of what life might be like without electricity and artificial light. It's scary, dark, chaotic and chilling. Don't let that be the status of your heart without Jesus, the one true light of the world. The one that needs no electricity. He will shine bright for all eternity. Let him shine a light in your heart and dispell the darkness of sin.

Not All Wine and Roses

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 NIV

I read a FB post from my daughter and then I read this verse. What she said in her post illustrates this verse so well. People were complaining that they still did not have power after Hurricane Irma. My daughter cautioned people to be patient in not having power as some people had lost their homes. She also asked them to be thankful that things were not worse than they are.

As Christians, we tend to think that everything should be wine and roses, happy thoughts only, that always praising God means never saying anything negative. This verse points out that is not always the case, nor should it be. Anyone that has children knows you must sometimes correct bad or wrong behavior, not because the child is bad, but they did or said something that is wrong, hurtful or inappropriate.

We must also sometimes do this for our fellow Christians. Human emotions run deep and when faced with stressful times, our 'Christian' demeanor sometimes takes a back seat. That's when our fellow Christians can step in and admonish us, in love, to remember where our help comes from and to be grateful for our blessings. We have every reason to experience sadness, anger, resentment..all those emotions that people think are bad. It's not the feeling that is bad, it's the action and reaction to that feeling.

So yes, if people are complaining they are without power while the house next door has been levelled, I'd say a little admonishment and love is in order. Let's lift each other up in times like this. Let's help with gentle reminders of God's love

Hurricanes

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6‭-‬7 NIV

For the past few days, all of Florida has watched as Hurricane Irma set the whole state in her sights. Not knowing what the full impact might be, we prepped as best we could, from stocking water and canned goods, filling up on gas, charging every electronic we own, to evacuating if in vulnerable areas. We packed important papers, dusted off our insurance policies, grabbed cash and clothes, and hunkered down...waiting.

As we watched Irma come through, trees swayed, roads flooded, oceans roiled, and bays overflowed. Although there is considerable damage from flooding and high winds, Floridians learned a thing or two since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Structures built since then withstood the high winds better than older ones. We learned to build homes and other structures that can hold up in inclement weatber, specifically hurricanes. We've rooted ourselves in knowledge, strengthening our homes against disaster. In the process, we have learned how to help each other in times of need. Understanding what the aftermath of a storm can be, we can be of greater assistance.

We can't give what we don't have which is why we should learn more about Jesus every day, learning his teachings and passing them on. Rooting ourselves in our faith, we can withstand the winds of the world when the storms come. We can also help others in times of need. To do this we must spend time in God's word, in prayer, and in practicing our faith. It is then we can be grounded and ready for anything.

We know storms will be coming. Do you have a plan? Are you prepared and grounded in Jesus?

The Bucket List

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1‭-‬2 NIV

Last night I was looking for a movie to watch on Netflix and found 'The Bucket List' with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. I had heard bits and pieces about the movie but has never seen it. From the trailers it looked to be a comedy and I was expecting something along the lines of 'Wild Hogs'. Well, that's not exactly true. The movie was poignant and well done. Both men faced cancer. Both were given less than a year to live. It was how they faced the mortal news that was the premise of the movie. Two unlikely strangers faced their final days together, doing things they never thought they'd do. It was as if they were attempting to set themselves free of the death sentence by ignoring it. Or maybe they hoped for a miracle that by living so freely they could beat the disease that was eating them alive.

I believe that as humans we know we are mortal but we don't think about it much. We spend our days trying to free ourselves from the law of death. We eat right. We exercise. We take care when working with power tools. We don't walk under ladders. We don't drink to excess. We do all this hoping to squeeze a few more years out of this life.

But our attempts are vain. We have an expiration date. Well, our physical bodies do. In order to preserve our souls for eternity, we must believe in the one who has set our spirit free from death. Free from sin. Free from eternal separation from God. Jesus offered up himself so that we might live forever. Sure we might be sad that our life hete is ending. People will mourn our passing. I think I will miss my family. But I will see them again because our God has conquered death so that we might live forever with him.

So no matter how much time you might have left, put God first on your bucket list.

The Least of These

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35 NIV

What a perfect verse for today. The world has been watching as Hurricane Irma churned its way to be the strongest cyclone on record. She comes on the heels of Hurricane Harvey that devastated Houston and other parts of Texas. A great many people have lost everything, some have even lost loved ones. We have seen the news as Florida has been making preparations over the past week where people could not just up and leave. All they have will be wiped away by wind and rain. There were some who are unable to leave on their own accord, whether elderly or disabled, or even without the proper resources. For a family struggling to pay bills, there's no money for extra gas and supplies, or for a hotel if they evacuate. Where will they go?

For many, Hurricane Irma will be a defining moment in their lives. And because of this, right now in Osceola County, staff members and volunteers of the Osceola Council on Aging have set up their special needs shelter, put out the cots and linens, fired up the kitchen and generators, and laid in supplies. They are manning the shelter around the clock for the most vulnerable citizens. In Tallahassee, staff members of local community service agencies went out on foot ensuring those who have no shelter know that a storm is coming and where the shelters are that they can seek refuge. All across Florida, first responders and emergency personnel are stocked and ready to go, working 12 hour shifts around the clock to ensure no one gets left behind. As we sit and wait to see what Irma does and how much impact she will have on our little town, I marvel at how much advance preparedness there was this time. No one was taking chances. As the old saying goes - prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

But in all this, people are helping people in need. Helping the least of these - the sick, the weak, the elderly, the disabled, the low income. These are disproportionally impacted by disasters and it is to these that Jesus called to his followers to help. The healthy person doesn't need a doctor, the sick person does. At least that's the way my dad always said it. He meant that we should help those that need help if we are able.

So in your preparations, remember there are people who will need help. Be kind. Be compassionate. Be patient. And most of all, remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Desperately Seeking Something

One thing I ask from the Lord , this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4 NIV

A lot of people are asking the Lord for lots of things right now. Safety from the storm. Capacity to rebuild after. Safety while travelling. Resources to prepare. Grace and strength for those suffering loss. These are just immediate needs that we ask help for from a divine power. We are almost helpless in some situations and we know there is no other way out except to get through it, which requires help from God.

David knew this all too well. He knew heartache. He suffered loss. Which is why his songs and prayers have a depth and range of human emotions that we can relate to. Yet through all this, he did not ask God for divine intervention in his struggles. He asked simply to be able to dwell with God for eternity. Why? To gaze at God's beauty. David knew the ugliness of human existence. He longed to look into the face of his savior forever.

His request is so simple yet so profound. It makes me almost ashamed of what I asked God to help me with today. But God cares about our earthly existence because he has a plan for us. And while he works in us, we should want to seek after him. In our seeking, we begin to see what he sees. In seeing that, we understand what he wants and it becomes our want. It is then we find true peace.

Be a seeker of God. Be a seeker of his temple.

Heed the Call

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Acts 2:21 NIV

What a perfect verse. Of course, God always has the right word at the right time. It's up to us to apply it to our lives. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey and in anticipation of Hurricane Irma, troops and relief efforts mobilize to ensure public safety during and after the storm, in addition to settle in for the long rebuilding period.

Unfortunately, these storms are unpredictable and devastating, especially for those who are vulnerable. We can prepare all we want and it could still not be enough. True, most will be physically safe, even if they lose their homes or businesses. And rescue personnel will do all they can to help people be safe.

But the truth is tbey won't be able to save eberyone. This is a reality we must accept, if even reluctantly. There is simply not enough manpower or preparation that can be 100% fool proof, allowing 100% citizen safety. Exacerbating this is the fact that not all people listen and respond to calla to evacuate. They refuse to leave their homes, or they simply cannot.

But God. I love that phrase..but God. God will save everyone...everyone that comes to him, that calls on him. All who believe will be given eternal life. He wants no one left behind and he has infinite resources to ensure your eternity with him. All you must do is heed his call. Evacuate from your sinful life, the one without God. Leave the darkness even though the light may be strange and new at first. The reward is worth it.

So in this hurricane season, if you are in the storm's potential path, be safe. And for everyone, call on the one who can save you with 100% certainty.
